At Pitaya Foods, every smoothie starts with something bigger than fruit - it starts with people. Our Meet Our Farmer series highlights the growers behind the dragon fruit you enjoy. It also covers evolving markets that help this vibrant fruit reach more tables worldwide.
Today, we’re introducing Don Julio, a longtime dragon fruit farmer. His work reflects tradition and the rising global demand for this unique fruit.

15 Years in Dragon Fruit Farming
Don Julio has been growing dragon fruit for over 15 years. On his land in Nicaragua, spanning 18 manzanas, he has 10 dedicated to dragon fruit. He has gained a deep understanding of the crop, from growing to harvest.
Like many farmers, his work has always been hands-on, from tending the crop to managing harvest. Over time, that consistency has helped him build a strong foundation for his business.
From Limited Access to New Opportunity
Despite years of farming experience, investments like a vehicle weren’t easily within reach because access to financing wasn’t guaranteed. Before he owned a truck, Don Julio used a donkey-led trailer to move materials and help him with daily work.
As demand for dragon fruit has grown in many markets, farmers like Don Julio see steadier sales. They also have more chance to plan ahead.
For Don Julio, that consistency created something new: for the first time, he was able to access credit.
A Milestone Moment
Based on his track record growing and selling dragon fruit to Pitaya Foods, Don Julio financed a truck. This investment directly supports his daily operations.
“At first, they told me no,” he explains. “But after seeing my receipts with Pitaya, they told me I could have any truck I wanted on the lot.”
The moment marked a meaningful shift, from limited access to real choice.

More Than a Truck
The dragon fruit he grows is often collected at local collection centers, having his own truck is not just about transport. It means freedom, flexibility, and a better quality of life.
With his own vehicle, Don Julio can:
- Move more easily between his land and nearby towns
- Transport supplies and materials for his farm
- Save time and reduce reliance on others for transportation
- Support day-to-day needs for himself and his family
“They gave it to me on credit based on my sales,” he explains. “I’m already paying it off - and I hope to finish early.”
The loan lasts five years, but he’s working to pay it off in four.

A Meaningful Step Forward
For Don Julio, the truck represents more than convenience - it’s a sign of progress.
It reflects years of steady work, the ability to build credit, and the chance to invest in his life.
At Pitaya Foods, we’re proud to work with farmers like Don Julio as part of a wider network where growth shows up in more than just harvests - it’s reflected in everyday moments that matter.
We believe real impact is built step by step through long-term relationships, fair partnerships, and shared success. When you choose dragon fruit, you’re supporting farmers like Don Julio as they grow brighter futures with every harvest.

Every dragon fruit smoothie has a story behind it. For Don Julio, it’s about a truck and everything that comes with it.
